1928 Alfa Romeo Wins the 2007 Mille Miglia

Winning Alfa

Imagine winning, in 2007, a 1000-mile race across Italy in a 1928 Alfa Romeo! If your name is Luciano Viaro or Luca Bergamaschi you're entitled to celebrate this exceptional victory in what is actually a regularity competition for vintage cars. Okay, it's not the flat-out event that the original Mille Miglia was but that does not detract from the speed and reliability required as competitors drove over the 1957 course, the last year that the Mille Miglia was run as a road race. Maintaining high average speeds in decades-old cars is no Sunday picnic… our sources tell us it was a tough battle between the winning car and a 1927 Bugatti T37. Among the competitors was an Alfa romeo 8C 2300 Monza, a historic model once driven by racing legends Nuvolari, Borzacchini, Varzi, Campari, Brivio and Trossi. Entrants included many modern cars, including the Prisca Taruffi Ferrari I featured in an earlier article. Next time, Prisca, you navigate and I'll drive.
