If my sons were wealthier I might ask them to give me this as a Father's Day gift: A round-trip ticket from Sidney BC to Detroit so that I could attend this year's Eyes on Design automotive design show, which happens to take place on that very weekend. Heck, if I was wealthier I'd buy my own ticket, as it is a wonderful show for anyone with an interest in design and classic automobiles. For 2006 the event, which occurs at the Edsel Ford estate on Lake St. Clair, takes "Art of Design" as its theme. As a result the cars will not be displayed by class, vintage year, or genre, but by academic design characteristics. Included are Abstract expressionism, Cubism/Futurism, Found Art, Modernism, Pop Art, Realism, Renaissance, Romanesque, Romanticism, even Hot Rods and Performance. Eyes on Design brings out the "who's who" of the auto industry and in particular the designers who sometimes show their own collector cars. But I agree with theCarConnection's Mike Davis who is miffed that Art Deco was left off the list. Having inspired many 30's and 40's autos, it seems a natural.
