This is the car I'll be looking at more than any other in 2008, starting March 16. It's the new Ferrari F2008, unveiled today and due to be tested at Fiorano beginning Monday. Of course it takes a very practised eye to tell the difference between this and last year's car and after decades of watching F1 I'll have to admit I cannot. Nevertheless any Ferrari is impressive so here's a brief rundown of the major changes. To begin, the 2008 regulations enforce a new electronic system to be used by all teams, consisting of a single control unit and software system, the development of which ends as the season begins. The gearbox must now be used for four consecutive events, there's higher side protection around the driver's helmet, and most importantly traction control and electronic race start systems are out. The monococque has been further cut away under the driver's legs and the side pods and engine cover are more tapered. New aerodynamic aids have been added although Ferrari says they could be changed before the season opener. It's an evolution of the 2007 car, not all-new, and interestingly is heavier. Just seeing this beauty makes me wish for the arrival of March or the resources to be a journalist at the pre-season tests.
