A Creative Discovery

With this artwork I'd like to honor a friend and former colleague whom I consider to be one of the most talented illustrators and art directors I've had the privilege of knowing in 30 years as an ad writer. His name is Ray Fry and when this illustration was completed as part of his portfolio he was a student in the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, where he'd hoped to become a car designer. We met when Ray, after an unhappy period with the Leo Burnett ad agency in Chicago, applied for a job with MacLaren Advertising in Toronto (now MacLaren McCann), which held the Chev-Olds-Cadillac portion of the GM account in Canada. I was the creative director, responsible for hiring and firing writers and art directors. One quick look through Ray Fry's portfolio and I knew I'd found a winner. Though I was Ray's boss, writers and art directors work best as a two-person team and we soon became team-mates: a frustrating time then as the agency's account executives (whom we creatives called "suits") sided with a very conservative client. This Ray Fry illustration takes us back to a different era, when creativity inspired an entire generation. Along with an entirely new generation as my daughter-in-law Jennifer now works with the agency's interactive group. (Note: she's on maternity leave so expect a brief delay in the Powell family's creative input.)
