A Famous General, Your Editor and Volvo Have Something in Common

Apparently there are two guys named Powell who fancy old Volvos. I'm one. The other is slightly better known. He is former secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Colin L. Powell. Thanks to an article in the New York Times I've learned about General Powell's affection for the Swedish automotive icon, which I happily pass on for your interest and amusement.
According to the article "he was often found behind the chairman's quarters at Fort Myer in Virginia tinkering with his cars." The General is quoted as commenting that "at one time I had six, stashed at various places around the post so the M.P.'s wouldn't find them all." Referring to how cars are checked for body filler disguising rust damage he added "my cars wouldn't pass anyone's magnet test... but it's been great fun and I've met a lot of interesting people." Mr. Powell is currently restoring a 1966 122S wagon.
I've been involved with three Volvos, raced one, drove another from San Francisco to Toronto in under 48 hours. With a buddy, of course, taking turns at the wheel. I was also at the opening of the Halifax factory when Prince Bernhardt of Sweden was on hand for the dedication. Can you believe that Volvos sold in North America were once assembled in Nova Scotia? When it comes to Volvos, we Powells do share a little history. (NYT photo of the General and his Volvo by Andrew Council.)
