A Fast and Furious Antique

Would you drive at 70 mph in this stunning antique? Well, I'm not sure I would, but the restored 1909 Pierce-Arrow has actually been clocked at that impressive number on the banked Rockingham Speedway. Autoweek has an enjoyable article on the Model 40PP Touring in which author Bob Tomaine drives it and describes the experience. Obviously you don't just jump in the driver's seat and motor away, since the control layout is different from a modern car (the throttle's between the brake and clutch pedals, for example) and as for the brakes, better allow lots of room for slowing down. Pierce-Arrow was one of the great luxury cars
in its era, and a winner in competition, too. Today's collector car enthusiasts tend to overlook antiques but the article helps explain why these cars are so fascinating... if one takes time to look.Permalink: A Fast and Furious Antique
