A Free Day Driving Our Favorite Saloon... uh, Sedan

September is one of the best months to visit England. Most tourists have left, the weather's delightful with minimal rain, the air takes on that crisp feeling we North Americans associate with autumn. Stroll down an historic mews, stop at a pub for a pint with bangers-and-mash, then slip behind the wheel of a vintage Jaguar Mark II sedan for a tour of the countryside. You can rent the Jag from my friends at The Open Road and if you win their online monthly contest you'll get an extra day free. I have no qualms about admitting that the small Jaguar "saloon" is my favorite production sedan, bar none. Its curvaceous lines, the very essence of Jaguar style, are absolutely gorgeous. The wood and leather interior represents the best of British. And that twin-overhead-cam 6-cylinder engine, a multiple LeMans winner, is one of autodom's greatest. The Open Road's Jaguar includes a Moss 4-speed-with-overdrive manual gearbox which they insist makes for a "sporty and an excellent long distance tourer." Having experienced one on-track in an E-Type I can only suggest that if you win this month's contest, make those first few gear changes slow and easy. The Moss box doesn't like quick shifts, as I learned to my embarrassment. This, I believe, is the last-but-one of The Open Road's contest celebrating 10 years in business so if you're heading to the UK (or better still, if you live there) don't miss out on a rare opportunity. Love that Jag!
