A Free Day’s Drive in a Classic Mustang

Prize Mustang

Another month has flown by and once again The Open Road is giving away a free day's classic car rental as part of their ongoing anniversary celebration contest. This month's car, a 1966 Ford Mustang 289 Fastback, will especially appeal to North Americans holidaying in the UK. It comes with a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and left-hand-drive, both of which should make the task of driving in Britain a little easier for neophytes, although driving on the left side of the road in a car with the steering wheel on the left requires a little extra care when watching for passing vehicles. As with all Open Road rentals, their Mustang is in perfect, trouble-free condition and has never been used on "salty"roads; to keep it in pristine condition the car is only available from the beginning of April through to the end of October. Incidentally, this is my favorite Ford Mustang, having all the qualities of the original with the added beauty of a fastback plus that superb 289 c.i. V-8.

  • Mine was a ’65- 2+2GT Fastback, maroon (wine red?) with the tame 210HP 289 and 4-speed Manual. Just after I bought it my job took me to Japan. My dear dad stole it from me ($1,500) and drove it till he died in ’76.

  • Thanks, Harley. We envy you those memories and for those fortunate to be visiting the UK, what better way to live them again!
