Award-Winning Mercedes 540K Special Roadster Goes on the Block

One of the highlights of August's Monterey classic car extravaganza is RM's Auction at the historic Arizona Biltmore hotel. The setting is beautiful and the cars are exquisite. Among the selection being offered is this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster, which is estimated to bring from $2,500,00 to $3,000,00 and has been subject to an award-winning frame-off restoration. Only twenty-five 540K Special Roadsters were built between 1936 and 1939, all of them featuring custom coachwork. This car features a body constructed by English coachbuilder Mayfair, with several distinct styling features, including rear fender skirts and a trunk-mounted spare. The 5.4 liter inline six-cylinder engine is supercharged, producing 180 hp, enough for a top speed in excess of 100 mph. A folding rumble seat accommodates two extra passengers, though they probably didn't enjoy the ride at those speeds!
