Rare Europeans
by Philip Powell on September 13, 2006
The 2006 Concorso Italiano at Monterey was a fabulous celebration of Italian cars but there was so much to see it was, at times, overwhelming. That, plus lunch queues as long as an airport security line, caused me to depart early and thereby miss the awards. However the winner's photographs are now available on the Concorso Web site, leading off with "Best of Show sponsored by Girard-Perregaux": the Corvette-powered 1967 Bizzarrini Strada owned by Gerd Eckstein. Though I'm well aware of the criteria concours judges use to select winners it must have been difficult with so many fabulous automobiles to choose from. Rarity may have helped in this instance; Giotta Bizzarrini was a Ferrari engineer who left after an argument with Enzo Ferrari, then worked on the first Lamborghinis and the Iso Rivolta before manufacturing low volume sports and racing cars in his own name.
