Bugatti Goes From Barn to Concours After a 45-year Sleep

Internet visitors have had great fun speculating on the mystery of the dusty vintage automobiles found in a Portuguese barn, which turned out to be no mystery at all as the owner had merely stored them until ready for restoration. But here's a true "barn find" that is nothing short of extraordinary. The car is a 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante that had sat inside a Pound ridge
, New York barn since 1962 until sold at a Christie's auction in June for $852,500. It was owned by 89-year-old John W Strauss, grandson of the man who built the Macy's department store and who, with his wife, went down with the Titanic.Classic Driver has the fascinating story behind what has been described in newspaper headlines as "The Greatest Barn Find Ever" but herewith a few highlights to whet your interest. The new owner, Dennis Nicotra, a Connecticut real estate developer, sent the car to a Bugatti expert, where it was examined and found to be totally original and driveable. It was thoroughly checked and lubricated, new tires were added, brakes overhauled. The barn was dry and the car had been properly prepared for storage. Mr. Nicotra has no intention of restoring it beyond the needed detailing. More good news: it will be shown at Pebble Beach August 19th in the Preservation Class. The Type 56C Atalante is arguably the most exquisite of all Bugattis, so seeing an unrestored example should be quite a thrill for the fortunate onlookers.
