As Pebble Beach 2009 approaches, the great classic car show looks more and more like a competition between auctions and special events. Gooding & Company is on the pole with the Don Lyons Collection. Consisting of seven automobiles, it focuses on Indy racing and spans nearly 80 years of motorsport history. The latest entries are in addition to Ettore Bugatti's personal car, a 1936 Bugatti Type 57C Coupe. Each car represents a specific milestone in racing history from the earliest, a 1909 Stoddard-Dayton Model K re-creation, to the most modern, Mario Andretti's 1985 Lola T900. The collection traces the history of Indy 500 race cars, highlighting those that circled the track in the teens plus the 200 mph ground-effects race cars.
