Chevrolet Chevelle SS Highlights Kruse Las Vegas Auction

Chevelle SS

In September 1969, when this handsome 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Coupe was introduced, I'd just been transferred from New York to London by the J. Walter Thompson ad agency. Because my job made me creative director of the Ford of Europe account I wasn't much interested in Chevrolets. And because I was a European car enthusiast I'd landed in my personal vision of automotive heaven, more interested in a modified Mini than a muscle car. Yet, had I been back in North America, I'd surely have been attracted to the Chevelle SS, a pumped up version of a popular mid-size Chevy. Thus, when noting that Kruse International had a Chevelle SS listed for its Las Vegas Fall Auction, I thought "wow! that's one I'd like to own." With an auto writer's humble budget I won't, of course, but you may… and while outbidding other enthusiasts can also enjoy some sunny days in friendly Las Vegas.

The car is a real SS with, according to Kruse, "two factory build sheets, numbers matching! No rust, original sheet metal, Great condition." 396 c.i. V-8 engine, obviously, plus a manual transmission. As you can see, the exterior's red; the interior's black. The auction takes place at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 24 and Sunday, November 25. Incidentally, what got my attention, aside from the Chevelle SS sale, is that the event marks "Kruse' Vegas auction's 34th year", making it historically similar to the big Scottsdale show organised by you-know-who. Needless to say there are many more antiques, classics and collector cars for sale so if you swing-and-a-miss on the Chevelle you could score a home run on something equally delectable.

  • My favorite muscle car. I’ve been in love with the Chevelle ever since Wooderson drove a black SS in Dazed and Confused.

  • Thanks for the comment. The SS was certainly a handsome car with (thankfully) restrained styling.
