Classic Boats
by Philip Powell on August 31, 2006
It isn't every day that you'll see classic boats displayed at car shows but it isn't unusual, either. No water handy? Bring them on trailers. Which is exactly what Riva, the legendary Italian boat builder, did at the 2006 Concorso Italiano in Monterey. The Rivas were, however, brand new, as the company, in addition to modern fiberglass luxury Cruisers, continues to build boats in the traditional runabout style with wooden hulls and decks. Having been raised in Ontario where craft of this type were once popular I'm a big admirer, still charmed by their elegance, speed, and sound. Now living by the ocean I rarely see one as they were meant for use in calmer lakes and rivers. The collecting and restoring of wooden speeboats is a popular hobby, limited, however, by availability and cost; they're expensive to purchase and maintain. Classic boats will be included at the upcoming Kirkland, WA, concours on the shores of Lake Washington where they can be seen in their natural element.
