Classic Cars Meet Classic Watches

my carrera.jpg

Back in 1969 my ex and I made our first trip to Europe, highlighted by a week’s skiing in Switzerland. Fiat’s press rep met us at the airport with the keys to a media car but before climbing the mountain road to Andermatt I insisted on a stop at a Zurich jewellery store. I was “obsessed” (as usual, Maggie might add) with buying a Heuer Carrera wristwatch, that being the trendy piece to own if you were a race or rally driver. One recently sold for just under $1500, quite a jump over the $125 I paid then. What prompts this comment is the fact that today almost every watchmaker offers an automobile or motor racing special edition, including TAG Heuer, now official chronograph of the IRL, the Indy 500 race, and of course F1. The Carrera in the photo is identical to the one still on my wrist.
