Classic Speedboats Born Again

GT Speedboat

During my teenage years I fell in love with mahogany-hulled speedboats carrying names like Chris-Craft, Garwood, Century... plus the Canadian brands Greavette and Ditchburn. It was a time when ‘Gentlemen’s Runabouts’ were the thing to own; boats with style that could be used for family recreation and friendly racing. I'm assuming that anyone with an appreciation for classic sports cars can't help but agree. I'll admit I never heard of Engelbert Frauscher's shipyard, but that's because we were thousands of miles (and a war) apart. Engelbert Frauscher founded his first shipyard in 1927, before I was born. Now the company is back with a 717 GT that includes the look that turned me on those many years ago. The firm claims that it is "beautifully balanced, the shaft propulsion and careful hull design promising manoeuverability, while the long, elegant front provides ample storage and the shapely deck is the perfect place to relax in the sun. The engine choice is petrol, diesel or hybrid, giving from 184-309 kW." As you can see, it's not just cars that go retro.
