Concours
by Philip Powell on April 2, 2007

Can it be a year since I last wrote about the "Keels and Wheels Concours & Auction"? My, how time flies by! Here it is 2007, we're all one year older (and supposedly wiser) and again I take pleasure in encouraging our "down south" viewers to visit this event at Seabrook, Texas on May 5th and 6th. What I especially like about this concours is its mix of classic cars and classic wooden boats. "Up north" in Toronto I was brought up around craft like these; I also spent my young years racing Olympic-type flatwater canoes constructed of wood so I have a special affinity for these beauties. Inevitably I became an old cars enthusiast, thus an event that includes both ranks highly with me.
This 12th annual Concours, the premier combined car and boat show in the U.S., will display over 200 classic automobiles and up to100 vintage wooden boats including Ferrari, Riva, Chris Craft, Rolls Royce, and many other fabled names from road and waters. Honored marques are Ferrari and Riva; an unparalled combination of Italian beauty and speed. Sir Stirling Moss, one of history's greatest race drivers, is the honoured guest. The show's Web site includes "a video of the 2006 event on YouTube" plus some delightful "photos of the cars and boats" with comments from their owners so if you have trouble justifying the trip, here's your best excuse. If Texas wasn't so darned far from BC... ah, well, there's always Kirkland in September, just down the road in Seattle.
