Coast-to-Coast in the Ultimate Adventure

They call it “the Ultimate Adventure in Motorsports” and while that may be a bit of a stretch, The Great Race is an exciting challenge for owners of wonderful old autos. (It’s actually a rally, not a race, but let’s not dispute semantics.) More than 100 vintage automobiles will participate in an event that begins in Philadelphia, PA, on June 24th and ends in San Rafael, CA, July 8th. The cars, which must be at least 40 years old, follow a set course while competing in a time-speed-distance competition of 170-to-480 or more miles daily on interesting back roads. Vehicle age is not a factor; last year the winner was a 1916 Hudson Speedster. At one point in my life I was an active rally participant so The Great Race certainly stirs my juices. Unfortunately I have no car in which to pour them but if I did, I’d surely be heading for Philadelphia in June.
