Monday, August 14th marks the beginning of a week-long classics celebration in Monterey, California. It is regarded as the world’s finest and is certainly the busiest. The highlight will be the 56th running of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on the grounds of the Del Monte Lodge, seen here at last year’s awards presentation. Many of the cars will be driving in the 9th annual Tour d’Elegance as rules state that in the case of a tie, the car that’s been driven gets the nod. No less than six major auctions occur during the week, including those by famed auctioneers like RM Auctions, Bonhams & Butterfield, and Russo and Steele. Concorso Italiano, an all-Italian show featuring some of that country’s finest creations, now competes with the Pebble Beach concours for attention. As well, visitors can attend a presentation of automobilia, view works by members of the Automotive Fine Arts Society, and mix with the rich and famous at the Quail, a lavish (and expensive) social affair. The week concludes with the Monterey Historic Car Races at Laguna Seca. I’ll be on hand to report on these events daily so be sure to watch for photos of some truly spectacular automobiles.
