Day One in Monterey

Porsche 356A

It is my first full day in Monterey, here to see and report on the Concours d’Elegance, auctions, drives, art displays, collector shows, and seemingly endless parade of events that make up the world’s largest classic car gathering. I’d hoped to begin reporting yesterday but the trip from Vancouver Island began with a 4AM wake-up and was followed by two flights with long delays due to (a) a passenger bridge that refused to connect with the aircraft and (b) push-off from YVR (Vancouver) into a holding pen where we sat for almost an hour awaiting clearance to San Francisco. Apparently SFO has a new flight-flow system designed to prevent stacking, though it seems to me the problem lies with the airlines wanting flights to arrive at a time convenient to passengers but inconvenient to traffic controllers. (I’d have happily accepted an inconvenient slot that didn’t begin with a 5:45 AM takeoff from Victoria International!) SFO’s rebuild is a mess, really ugly, so it took another 1/2 hour for this groggy traveler to find the bus to the Marriott where a Honda Accord SE media car was awaiting. NIce car, nice drive through scenic country until a massive traffic jam on Highway 85 slowed us for another hour. Just happy to be here, I decided to postpone the initial Monterey post to Tuesday. This Porsche 356A, sitting in a parking lot, was the first old car spotted and seemed like a nice way to start our own Classical Drive “show.”
