If the French firm of Delahaye ever built a less-than-handsome automobile, I've never seen nor heard of it. That explains why Delahayes are always contenders at judged shows and why I'm not surprised to learn that a Delahaye was voted both "Best in Show" and "People's Choice Award" winner at the first annual Palm Springs Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance. In the photo above, event organizer Paul Merrigan stands with Ken and Ann Smith of La Jolla, proud owners of their 1936 Delahaye 135 Competition. More than 3000 spectators attended the inaugural Concours, delighted to admire the 100+ exquisite automobiles on display. The Best of Show winner was also presented with a limited-edition print by noted automobile artist Nicholas Watts. It depicts the winning Bugatti Type 35 in the 1930 Monaco Grand Prix and is signed by the artist and the late Rene Dreyfus, who won that year.
