I’ve always liked Italian cars, so I’m really looking forward to the 2006 Concorso Italiano at Pebble Beach. And this year it will be honoring designer Giorgio Giugiaro, the Targa Florio, 100 years of automobiles from Lancia, and the 35th anniversary of the Pantera. Named “Designer of the Century” in 1999, the talented Giugiaro is responsible for some of the most fascinating automotive designs ever created. Seeing them all in one place will be quite a treat. The Targa Florio, of course, is one of the world’s oldest road races (still celebrated as a retro rally), having first run in 1906. It will be recognised by a stunning group of famous cars that have raced there over the decades. As for Lancia, the marque is little-known in North America but during its 100 years in business produced cars renowned for their advanced technology. The 1934 Lancia in the photo is one of the first cars to be fitted with a retractable hardtop.
