A diorama, for the benefit of anyone unfamiliar with the term (which included me until a few years ago) is a 3-dimensional still-life replication of a place or event, sometimes life-size but most often scaled down. It is particularly well-suited to model cars because it allows the viewer to see the original vehicles as they might have appeared in their day. Few model retailers offer dioramas but one that does is the Surf City Model Car Company. surf City only deals with very small artisan-manufacturers from around the world, which assures that its selection is unique. A superb example is this Bugatti Type 51 Diorama from Claude Cordina of France; remarkably in the small 1/43 scale. The model comes with a custom cherrywood case that enhances the presentation. No prices shown on the Web site, which is undergoing a much-needed rebuild, but you can enquire at info@SurfCityModelCars.com.

Leave it to the French! We’ve all done it, but what N. American would make a diorama of a “pit stop”?
