Dreaming on Woodward Avenue

48 Chevrolet Fleetside

While I was mixing with the wealthy and their exotic classics at Pebble Beach last week, some 2000 miles east an event was taking place that was the complete antithesis in style and purpose. The 12th annual Woodward Dream Cruise for muscle cars, hot rods, and just about any other type of collectible, rolled into Detroit with up to 60,000 cars cruising the strip and an estimated 1-million people watching. If those numbers seem like an exaggeration, I should point out that the parade extends all the way from the Michigan Fairgrounds to the city of Pontiac. Woodward is a very long avenue. As the Cruise grew in popularity the automakers inevitably got involved, showing off their newest products and sometimes, thankfully, their oldest. GM this year created a huge display of milestone vehicles, drawing on cars from its own Heritage Collection, including this delightful 1948 two-tone Chevrolet Fleetside. Not having discovered how to be in two places at the same time, I couldn't attend but my friends at theCarConnection (it's their home turf) covered the event. Their article is packed with photos and fascinating trivia.
