Auctions
by Philip Powell on October 10, 2006
One of the year's more interesting auctions takes place in Oxnard, California, on October 21st. Gooding & Company is auctioning the entire collection of the late Otis Chandler, who passed away last February. Chandler was best known for transforming the family-owned Los Angeles Times from a mediocre regional newspaper into one of national significance, the cornerstone of the Times-Mirror media empire. But he was also a racing enthusiast and a collector of rare cars and motorcycles, which he housed in his own museum. Highlights of the auction will include include ten Packards; a 1907 Renault; a 1931 Duesenberg J Special Phaeton by LeBaron; a 1963 Corvette Split Window Z-06; "Big Tank," a 1901 Indian F Head Single (which might be the oldest American motorcycle extant); and a 1907 harley-Davidson Strap Tank Single. Gooding & Company has set numerous world records, including the highest price paid for an American car at auction, the spectacular 1935 Duesenberg "Mormon Meteor" SJ Speedster highlighted in this photo from the Gooding site.
