Auctions
by Philip Powell on July 23, 2007

He's one of the richest men in Britain and obviously doesn't need the money but for whatever reason, Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One's head man, has chosen to auction off over 50 cars from his private collection. A number of historic pre-war Mercedes cars will be offered, including this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster, which auctioneer RM estimates may go for $5.5-6.5 million. Postwar cars, such as a pair of 300 SL's and a 1954 Ferrari 250 Europa GT MKII are on the list as well, and representing Ecclestone's eclectic taste, a pair of Fiat 500's and VW beetles in immaculate condition. The auction will be held at London's Battersea Park on October 31st. F1 enthusiasts in America, furious at the dropping of the US GP from next year's calendar along with his haughty remark that "F1 doesn't need America," may wish that Bernie would be auctioned as well. Throw in Tony George and make it a "2-for-the-price-of-1" sale.
