Concours
by Philip Powell on August 18, 2006
No Italian auto show would be complete without Fiat and needless to say the firm was well represented at the Concorso Italiano. Unfortunately, for most North Americans, the name reminds them of tiny autos rented at airports or railway stations and driven madly around the streets of Rome by exhuberant Italians. Not that there's anything wrong with such simple transport; I personally have fond memories of Fiats (and identical Spanish Seats) rented for various European vacations. But the history of the marque goes back to the turn of the century when Fiat competed in some of the earliest motor races and since then the company has created a number of outstanding automobiles, both beautiful and fast. I was delighted when I spotted this 1935 Fiat 5085 Mille Miglia Aerodynamica Coupe, named after the Mille Miglia 1000 mile race in which it competed at the hands (if the script on the side - Viva Nuvolari - is to be believed) of Tazio Nuvolari, the Michael Schumaker of his day. I'll show you additional Concorso photos in the weeks to come... meanwhile be certain to scroll down for more posts from our continuing coverage of the Monterey Classic Car extravaganza.
