Automotive Art
by Philip Powell on March 29, 2006
On Classical Drive I plan to occasionally feature the work of automotive fine artists like Frederick Yohe of Philadelphia. Yohe's works hang in the collections of such notable individuals as Mario Andretti, the jaguar cars Corporate Collection, racers Paul Newman, Nigel Mansell and Emerson Fittipaldi. He describes his technique as "layered reality... a section of a 1940's Mercedes hood might require a dozen base layers (to build the colors through light and shadow) plus another twenty layers (to bring out the lightness and darkness gradations) plus another dozen or so to paint the reflections and shadows." Regardless of the intent, I think his work is exquisite, proof that the automobile is, indeed, sculpture in motion.
