Antique Autos
by Philip Powell on June 7, 2007

Ah, the things we could have done and should have done. One rainy morning during the four years I lived in London I stumbled upon a number of very old cars exiting Hyde Park. I didn't realise it at the time but I was witnessing the start of the annual London to Brighton Run, which first occurred in 1896 to celebrate the end of a law that required automobiles to be preceded by a man on foot. Appropriately, cars participating in the modern run must have been built pre-1905. My big mistake was in not recognising the importance of those Brass Era beauties, otherwise I'd have parked at an interesting spot along the route to watch them in action. Or perhaps made friends with an owner and got myself invited along as a passenger in a following year.
Eventually, reading up on automotive history helped me appreciate antique automobiles and now I find them fascinating. Thus I'm pleased to draw your attention to another London to Brighton Run, this one in Indiana on Saturday, July 14th, organised by The Indiana British Car Union. It starts at London Indiana; unfortunately it doesn't end at a place called Brighton nor is it limited to antiques. This 130 mile run is open to any British automobile and finishes at Lawrenceburg. Well, okay, so they've commandeered a famous name but it's all in good fun and if it helps make folks aware of the historic British event that's fine with me.
