GM Tracker Appears at Barrett-Jackson With This Blogger’s History

GM Tracker

To be honest, I can't imagine anyone spending really big bucks on this "vintage" GM Tracker when it rolls onto the Barrett-Jackson 2009 Scottsdale stage. But to be equally honest I couldn't have imagined being paid a lot of bucks for driving one in a commercial several years ago. The director, Alan Watanabe, needed performance driving shots and called on his friend, ad agency buddy and ex-racer, to take the wheel. That was me. I was doubtful that the Geo Tracker was up to the cornering techniques the cameraman demanded but to my surprise it handled well and safely. For those of you unfamiliar with the name it was actually a Suzuki product, assembled in the same Ontario factory as the GM-badged vehicles. I spent the money on a stylish and warm winter coat at Harry Rosen's exclusive Toronto store. A few months later, while flying across Canada on a now-defunct discount airline, Canada 3000, the coat was stolen by a fellow passenger when I was delayed by a flight attendant who insisted I aid my seat-mate, a Japanese businessman who spoke no English. Canada 3000 eventually compensated me for the coat in spite of attempts to date its lovely rep. In a strange twist of fate, her father was captain of a restored Muskoka Lakes steamboat that employed me when I was a young man. Remarkable how transportation history brings people together.
