As We See Things
by Philip Powell on December 9, 2007

My friends at Hemmings are eager to reach what they call "The Next Generation," classic car owners who will keep the old-car hobby vibrant for decades to come. A noble intent that I wholeheartedly support, by the way. Every month, hemmings classic car creates a page featuring the story of someone doing his or her part to keep the old-car hobby vibrant by driving an old car. They're interested in hearing about owners under the age of 25 who use a pre-1980 American car as their primary source of transportation. Stories of the experience with good photos of car and owner are what they're after. A few rules do apply, as in: "The owner needs to be a registered owner and driver. No brand-new owners please (if you just bought your car last week, there are fewer stories to tell). Also, submissions ideally should come from the car owners themselves - we're not big on the whole 'surprise' thing." Hemmings has an easy e-mail form on its Web site where you or a friend can apply to be recognised in "The Next Generation."

Hey, I owned one of those (a 51) for a little while, and I was under 25 when I did. Does that count? Driving from Ft. Monmouth to ft. Gordon, I left it somewhere on old Hiway 1 when the diff. went and continued in a 47 Chrysler I picked up for $75.

Go back and get that Packard, Harley! Sorry, it doesn't count. Hemmings wants stories from current owners of old cars.

The restriction to classic American cars is only because we run the Next Generation column in Hemmings Classic Car, a magazine dedicated to collectible American cars. Unfortunately, we don't have a similar column in Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car, HCC's sister magazine dedicated to imports and foreign cars.
