Europeans boast of glamorous sports cars, F1 champions, ingenious economy sedans, but we North Americans have our own specialty vehicle: the pickup truck. Okay, it's not pretty and was intended as a working vehicle but the pickup is full of character, to say nothing of a unique place in automotive history. Which helps explain why the Hershey Antique Auto Museum has produced a special display dedicated to the American pickup, running until April 30, 2008. Go back to the Model T and you'll soon discover why an automobile that can be put to work in farm and delivery duties was as useful, if not more so, than the passenger car. My own experience with pickups was limited but I soon discovered that when unloaded, they could be fun, yet nasty in the corners. Add some payload to the beds and the little trucks became well-balanced servants. High seating positions and close-coupled cabins aided visibility, V-8 engines added power… yet there was something about the American pickup that transcended function, favoring, instead, a lifestyle devoted to freedom of movement. Bring what you got, toss it in the back, hit the road.
