One of the oddest and most fascinating cars to be sold at the 2006 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction was this 1919 La Bestioni, a beastly Racer from an era when monster racers thrilled onlookers and terrified their drivers. Hidden by a 2-seat, boat-tail body is a 14-liter, 6-cylinder engine which, like its chassis, began life as a pre-1920's American La France firetruck. La Bestioni features a 4-speed transmission, power steering and power brakes; the latter indicating that, unlike Fiat's 28-liter 1910 monster which allegedly hit 145 mph and had no brakes, it was designed to stop as well as go. Estimates as to La Bestioni's top speed are missing, leading one to suppose that nobody had the nerve to find out. Fortunately someone had enough nerve to sign a check for $167,400, making former owner Gale Wales happy.
