Historic BMW Race Cars Heading for Amelia Island

In case you needed one, here's another reason to attend the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in Florida, March 9-11. BMW is bringing several historic racing machines from BMW Mobile Tradition, including the 1941 BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Roadster seen above.
In the late 1930's the 328 ruled the 2-liter sports car racing class. For the running of the 1940 Mille Miglia BMW prepared a team of 328-based aluminum-bodied, streamlined roadsters and coupes. Engine power in the 1971 c.c. six was increased to 135 hp and Italy's Touring was hired to construct lightweight "Superleggera" aluminum bodies to take full advantage of aerodynamic potential. The lines of the roadsters were similar to the coupe that won both the two-liter class and the race overall. The 328 Mille Miglia Touring roadster was a further development, designed to compete in 1941 in the proposed Berlin to Rome race and in the 1941 Mille Miglia. Both races were cancelled due to the war but 61 years later the husband and wife team of Giuliano and Lucia Canè took this BMW Mobile Tradition-prepared 328 to an overall first place at the Mille Miglia Historica.
Also appearing at Amelia Island will be the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy-winning 1939 BMW RS 500 supercharged motorcycle, the 1999 Le Mans winning BMW V-12 LMR, and a 1996 BMW-powered mclaren f1
