Model Cars

What do you do for amusement when you spend all day supervising the restoration of Mercedes-Benz 300 SL coupes and roadsters? Well, if you're Rudi Koniczek, you have fun with slot cars. But not your ordinary, average slot car. Rudi has dozens to choose from, some of which he constructed himself. I should explain that Rudi Koniczek is world-renowned for his restoration work with full-size classic Mercedes sports cars; you can read about him in a previous blog here and see some of the cars undergoing work in the shop here. When I asked how he came to specialise in 300 SL's, Rudi explained that years ago, as a young slot car enthusiast, he noticed that Mercedes 300 SL's were not represented among stock racing models and so he decided to build his own. From there to full-size SL's is quite a jump! I was invited to see his current slot collection and to say that I was blown away is an understatement... while I didn't count, there appeared to be over a hundred models plus a challenging track, including a pits scene in miniature. Apologies for the inadequacy of the photo but I wanted to show you more than a close-up might accomplish.
