How to Make Racing More Exciting: Look Back

Concerned as many are over the lack of passing in F1 and Champ Car races, I recall the 1960's when braking later into the corner would get you a pass (or a spin). And suddenly I was reminded that open-wheel race
cars were smaller in that era. Modern F1 cars take up a lot of pavement, Champ Cars even more. Could this be a solution? Perhaps with smaller engines? Jimmy Clark in a 1.5 liter Lotus was just as spectacular to watch as a modern-day Schumacher or Bourdais. So my suggestion to Bernie Ecclestone and Kevin Kalkhoven (and even Tony Hulman if he's willing to listen to anyone but himself) is this: Draw up a list of length/width specs for a future race car, based on giving drivers more room to manoeuver around other racers. Reduce the weight, cut the engine size to save fuel and make an impression on the "greeners" among us. At last, no more bitchin' about Monaco's narrow streets, and fellow Canadians Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani can do their boxing in the ring.Permalink: How to Make Racing More Exciting: Look Back
