As We See Things
by Philip Powell on April 22, 2009

So you've just found the classic car of your dreams, negotiated a fair price, and need to ship it home. Except that you live in Bellingham, WA and the car is in Sarasota, FL. How do you find the best price without spending hours on the phone haggling with folks you've never met? The "Shipping Price Estimator" (SPE) from uShip is a new tool for estimating vehicle transport cost based not only on distance and weight, but also on trucking routes and availability. By selecting the shipment category and plugging in the ZIP codes, the reader is able to get a shipping estimate based on actual transactions in the uShip auction-style marketplace plus distance, routing and carrier capacity.
Because of the marketplace nature of uShip.com, the estimate will vary from day to day. Powered by the "Transportation Price Index," uShip's industry tool for tracking transportation prices, the cost is expressed in dollars per ton-mile. As the TPI changes, results from the SPE will change, ensuring the most accurate and up-to-date estimate. Your humble reporter has never had to contemplate the cost of shipping that restored Morris Minor convertible he dreams of acquiring but if ever the day arrives, uShip's Internet-based system would seem to be a handy tool. Oh, and why a Morris Minor? That's another story for another day.

Never mind, I found it. Is it a Pierce Arrow?

Ship a classic car through UShip? Are you kidding me? Yes, you will get a very cheap price compared to well known Carriers. Why? Because most all the so-called Carriers on UShip are people that transport without the Federally mandated COMMERCIAL cargo and liabilty insurances! The profiles are filled full of incorrect info. Be sure to check your Carrier's Motor Carrier "MC" number at http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_html.prc_limain
Be sure to get a signed contract and a Certificate of Insurance sent to you in YOUR name directly from the Carrier's Insurance Company.
The information is being provided to you as a courtesy. Read the UShip User Agreement closely. You will find that it states that they do NOT verify the listed Carrier's credentials but yet no one is suppose to register as a Carrier on the site without them. That part of the User Agreement doesn't get enforced by UShip.
Ship at your own risk. Almost all Carriers on UShip are people with pick-up trucks. They too, are required to follow the same rules as semi's when transporting across state lines in a transport-for-hire capacity ie vehicle markings, DOT physical, log books etc..... Call your state DOT office to find out!

On closer look, it isn't a PA. It isn't even American. It is RHD, so most likely British.

I've never purchased a vehicle that I had to have shipped in. I appreciate the advice.
