If you own an old car and live in a city where movies are frequently filmed - in today's multinational world that can be almost anywhere - you could earn money with your vehicle by renting it to the producers. If you're lucky you may even get to drive the car in a scene, though that may require joining a union. Beware of illusions of fame for the money's not great and the tedium of sitting around between takes can soon spoil the fun; the movie-making business, like flying an aircraft, can be described as "moments of sheer terror interrupted by long periods of boredom." Forget approaching the film makers directly. Even if you own a restored 1927 Hispano-Suiza they won't want to know you, since producers only book cars through specialists. But with some discreet enquiries and a little luck you and your Hudson will appear parked on a 50's street or be driven by Paul Newman in his next film, if he makes one. The New York Times online Drive section has a charming article about an old man in New Jersey and his star cars. Image © New York Times
