Hudson Shines as Pickups Popular at Auction

Aside from muscle cars, the next most popular segment at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction appeared to be the ubiquitous American pickup. Almost as much fun and considerably cheaper to buy, old pickups are still easily found in junkyards, backyards, and farmyards. The market will probably drive prices up (BJ's auctioneers were certainly trying their best) but for now they're still affordable. A perfectly acceptable 65 Chevrolet Stepside went for $15,500 though I suspect this charmer will bring a great deal more. It's a 1939 Hudson Big Boy 3/4 Ton that's been subjected to a complete frame-off restoration. The engine is a "Power Dome" big-six mated to a 3-speed manual transmission. Only 640 commercial vehicles
were produced by Hudson in 1939, thus the rarity of this pickup further increases its value; indeed so rare that I overheard several spectators remark that they'd no idea Hudson ever made a pickup.Permalink: Hudson Shines as Pickups Popular at Auction
