Considering how few were manufactured I'm delighted by the frequency with which Duesenbergs appear in concours and at auction. No surprise, then, that Canada's RM Auctions will be featuring not one, but two rare Duesies in "Automobiles of Amelia Island," to be held at Florida's elegant Ritz-Carlton Hotel on March 8th. Each has an extraordinary history, however I've chosen to highlight this 1931 Duesenberg Model J Convertible Coupe by Murphy, engine number J395. The car found its way into the Pacific Auto Rentals collection during the late 1940s (one of the best-known suppliers of antique and classic cars to Hollywood television and movie producers): the centerpiece of their collection, it starred in such films as "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and "Gable and Lombard." Still seen on Hollywood sets in the late 1970's, J395 became the personal car of Frank Buck, who hosted the TV series "Bring 'em Back Alive." Any Duesenberg is worth a small fortune but if a personality is involved the value rises exponentially.
