Jaguar

The Jaguar D-Type was not only the fastest sports-prototype of the 1950s, it was the most beautiful. Curvaceous, purposeful and, for its period, very aerodynamic. Look at the photo above and dare tell me I'm wrong! Indeed, if you've got enough spare cash in your jeans you can buy it with the highest bid at Gooding & Company's annual Scottsdale auction on January 23rd, 2010. This D-Type has considerable racing provenance, beginning in 1956 with driver Pearce “Pete” Woods, who ran it at events throughout Southern California. A podium finisher at Santa Barbara, Bakersfield, Palm Springs, Riverside, Paramount Ranch and Pomona, XKD528 retired to street car status in 1964. “According to Jaguar historian Andrew Whyte, this Jaguar D-Type Sports Racer’s victory at the Pomona Six-Hour Enduro in November 1958 is widely considered the last big win for a D-Type in the US,” says David Gooding, founder and president of Gooding & Company. It has since been featured in numerous magazine articles and rallied in the Colorado Grand, Terry Larsen’s C & D-Type Rally, and the Copperstate 1000. A recent comprehensive restoration included its original appearance of cream over blue. (Who said D-Types had to be British Racing Green?) At the same Scottsdale auction Gooding will also offer a rare Pinin Farina 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Series I Cabriolet, a superbly-appointed 1956 Maserati A6G/54 Berlinetta, Hollywood’s 1934 Hispano-Suiza J-12 T68 Cabriolet, and a top-performing 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750. I'd gladly go to Arizona just to look at those beauties.

D-Types don't have to be British Racing Green, but it helps!
