While the great concours of this world are a pleasure to attend they're rather formal and definitely hands-off. Local shows, on the other hand, can be more fun, with owners eager to chat and willing to let you get up close to their cars. The 2009 Classic at Pismo Beach is a local show but it's a big one, lasting three days and with all sorts of special activities; indeed, it refers to itself as "Central California's finest seaside classic & street rod car show." As I've never been there I can't argue with that claim; in fact, the first year I wrote about the show I had to look up Pismo Beach on the map (it's off Highway 1, about 80 miles north of Santa Barbara). This year's show takes place from June 19-21 and features a Car Show & Shine, "Cruise Night," Live Entertainment, "The Hot Rod Bar and Grill" located pier-side, live entertainment, live charity auction, BBQ, Poker Run, and Gala. June seems a long way off but the days pass quickly so if you'd like to enter your car I suggest you do so now because the entry fee increases as the show gets closer. You can e-mail pamb@thepismobeachclassic.com or check the Web site for more info. Spectators get in free, which is one more enticement for anyone lucky enough to be in the area when the 24th annual Classic takes place.
