There were several outstanding muscle cars at the Steamworks Concours d'Elegance but the one that immediately caught my eye was a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible. Maybe because it was the prettiest. Maybe because it was one of the quickest. Rated at 335 hp it could cover the 1/4 mile in 14.57 seconds at 99.56 miles per hour. 0-60 acceleration was 6.5 seconds, impressive for a car that weighed nearly two tons. The massive engine fit tightly in a standard Mustang, thus cornering quickly, with so much weight up front, would need a driver with Carroll Shelby's talents. Not just a drag racer, the 500KR
was comfortably appointed in order to be used as a European-style GT car, which concept Shelby appreciated following his years in Europe as a race driver. Owner Alyn Edwards might be frustrated by BC's traffic if he let this steed out of the stable too often but no doubt he enjoys its more docile qualities. Even standing still it looks like a thorobred: "KR" appropriately stood for King of the Road.
