Mustang II, More Than Half a Mustang

Mustang II

It was the Mustang that traditional "Stang" enthusiasts hated. Dubbed Mustang II this was Ford's attempt at reviving its pony car following the Arab oil embargo in 1973. Ford called it the "right car at the right time." And the company was indeed right. Sales exceeded the original as buyers accepted that driving fun did not have to mean straight-line performance. Styling exercises like the Mach I and Cobra II further increased sales although Mustang lovers were still not happy. I'll confess that I gave the Mustang II few compliments at the time and yet last summer a yellow Mustang II convertible in as-new condition, got my attention. For several weeks it was parked nearby, apparently owned by a young woman working part-time at a local pub. Curious to learn more about the car and eager to take photos I tried, without success, to contact her; a shame, really, as I felt she was in possession of a car that may some day be better appreciated. My thanks to an article in McLellan's monthly Automotive Chronicles by Robert McLellan for reminding me of the Mustang II, along with several other worthy classics.
