New Owner Celebrates Lovely Lincoln With My Champagne

Lincoln on Stage

Today, Saturday, I shifted my attention to the Gooding auction at Scottsdale Fashion Square. It was the company's first appearance in auction week and a welcome one for many visitors, including me, because Gooding specialises in sports cars and true classics, plus a handful of lesser and unusual vehicles to add variety. Like RM, it's a classy affair, including a champagne breakfast that I was too late to enjoy. While busy composing blogs on the laptop in the morning I used the computer's clock as a reference, only to realise too late that it was set for pacific time, whereas Arizona is in Mountain time. You're looking at the auction stage, where an elegant 1935 Lincoln Model K Semi-Collapsible Cabriolet is about to be sold. This car was absolutely stunning and in beautiful condition. Now look closely at the price on the overhead display: $63,000. The estimated range went from a low of $90,000 to a high of $120,000, which seems reasonable, yet the final bid was only $67,000! As it was sold with no reserve the owner must be kicking himself (unless he's very wealthy), whereas the buyer is probably celebrating with some of that champagne I missed.
