German Cars
by Philip Powell on March 31, 2007

If there's a bit of a gap between yesterday's blog and today's, my apologies. I've just returned from a two-day break on the BC mainland, attending the "Pacific Auto Show" media presentations, where my attention was focused on 2007 models. During the trip I overheard fellow Island journalist Pedro Arrais mention that when first squiring wife Barbara his car was an "Opel GT". No wonder Barb fell for Pedro! The Opel GT was a German sports coupe that General Motors brought to America under the Buick umbrella. Needless to say Buick dealers and salespeople didn't have a clue what to do with this little beauty. During the 2007 Vancouver show GM launched a "Saturn 3-door Astra" which, except for front-wheel-drive, is similar in concept to the German Opel GT of the 60's. That Opel GT came to the US with a1.9 liter engine producing 102 hp at 5200 rpm. Standard transmission was a 4-speed, though a 3-speed automatic was available.
