Not Quite Your Everyday Rolls-Royce, Sheik’s Ride Wins Award

Rolls Royce Landaulette

This is what you ride in when you're the head of an oil-rich country. The 1966 Rolls-Royce Phantom V State Landaulette, with body by Mulliner Park Ward, was owned by His Highness Sheik Issa Bin Sulima Al-Khalite, ruler of Bahrain. One of just five made exclusively for ceremonial purposes and the second built, it was first shown at the London Motor Show in Earls Court, 1965. Perhaps the Sheik, strolling through the show, paused, pointed, and said "ah, yes, I'll have that one." It is now owned by Ken and Ann Smith of La Jolla, CA, who must surely have fun parading past the locals in full ceremonial regalia. Here it is, getting a 2nd place award in 1946-1974 European Classics at the 2009 Palm Springs Desert Classic Concours d'Elegance. The comely presenter is Anne albright de Bonrepos. More photos can be seen at the Desert Sun newspaper site, including one with your reporter and his sun-stunned assistant.
