Not Your Little Red Wagon

57 Rambler Rebel Mariner

It took the Hemmings newsletter to remind me (those guys really get around!) of a growing enthusiasm for collectible station wagons. Interesting because during the past two-dozen years the wagon has all but disappeared from American manufacturer's vehicle offerings, during which time the automotive press did little but make fun of these practical cars. And cars they were, not trucks hiding under the guise of sport-utility. Wagons are making a minor comeback, thanks to the Europeans, but I don't expect this to have much of an impact on the Big 2-1/2; crossovers are the wagons of the future. Congratulations, then, to a new club dedicated to vintage station wagons, folks who happily appreciate the wagon's versatility and are willing to spend time and money on restoration. The organisation calls itself the International Station Wagon Club (I like the use of "International" as there are many fine wagons from other countries worthy of collecting.) It has a magazine, Tailgate, and an inaugural convention in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 21-23, 2007. Check it out at the ISWC Web site.
