Commercial artists normally begin their work with a few initial renderings. The above is Charles Maher's proposal for the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance poster. If you're an automobile fine art practitioner, creating a Pebble Beach poster is the equivalent of michelangelo's commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Well, not quite, but you get what I mean. When I visited the Pebble Beach Concours in 2006 I purchased fellow-Canadian Jay Koka's event poster; suitably framed, it proudly hangs on my living room wall. Look closely at this image and you'll recognise Maher's rough as an Oldsmobile concept car. Look even closer and you'll spot similarities with the Chevrolet Corvette. As Pebble Beach gets closer to to the August 17 show date, Charles Maher's masterpiece will be considerably refined and is certain to become a future collectible.

And behind the Chevy, a Buick Le Sabre (er?). It may be 2008, but it looks more like 1953.

Good eye! It's the 1951 LeSabre, though not called a Buick at the time. It was loaded with advanced technology and supposedly cost $7 million to build. The LeSabre was designed by another guy named Harley, who drove it 45,000 miles as his personal car.
