Pirelli Presents a Classic Beauty

Sophia Loren

So who is this gorgeous woman and what is she doing in a classic cars site? In case you’re too young to recognise her, that’s Sophia Loren and she’s being groomed for a photo in the 2007 Pirelli Calendar. (Tires, classic cars… get it? Actually I shouldn’t make excuses for Ms. Loren’s appearing here; the Italian superstar proves that older women can be very sexy, indeed. She was recently proclaimed “The world’s most beautiful woman” by Time Magazine.) The Pirelli Calendar was first published in the 1960′s as a promotional effort when Pirelli’s image was drawing blank stares in Britain. You can’t buy one; heck, you can’t even have a copy unless your name is on a very exclusive list. The subjects were internationally-known models photographed in the nude or near-nude by some of the world’s best photographers. For 2007 Pirelli took a different road, creating a return to the simplicity of the film sets, stories and photography of the early 60′s (reminiscent of the films of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni). The stars of this edition are five of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and beloved actresses: Sophia Loren, Penelope Cruz, Hilary Swank, Naomi Watts and daring newcomer Lou Doillon, photographed by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in California. The 2007 Pirelli Calendar was introduced to the press, guests, and collectors from around the world at Battersea Evolution Park in London on November 16.

  • why are’nt these calendars available to the public for purchase?

    – Thanks for your comment. It was part of Pirelli’s marketing strategy to keep the calendars exclusive as this would add mystique and attract more publicity. The technique seems to work as each year, when the new one is launched, the event gets worldwide coverage.

I’ve never owned one myself and I agree it would be nice if Pirelli offered them for sale. But to maintain that exclusivity the company would have to charge at least $75.
